Spring is coming, and with it, its days are longer and brighter. Luckily, you're about to discover that natural light has unsuspected powers for the skin. Say goodbye to the lack of brightness of the winter that's coming to an end and hello to the gentle rays of the March sun!

The powers of light on the skin

Light has extraordinary power over the skin: it sets the pace. Captured by the retina, light sends signals to our internal clock, located in our brain, which tells the skin when to accomplish its various missions. When the morning sun announces the start of the day, the skin knows it must accomplish its goal for the day: protect itself against external aggressions.
The epidermis therefore dons its protective barrier costume and fights against the cold, wind, dust, pollution, etc. When the darkness of night arrives, our biological clock sends melatonin, the sleep hormone, into the body, signaling to the skin that it is time to regenerate. It then boosts its cell renewal and microcirculation. Light therefore participates in the permanent resynchronization of our internal biological clock.

When our skin lacks light

When our internal clock is out of sync, the adverse effects are quickly felt! The most telling example is jet lag when we feel like sleeping even though it's broad daylight because our biorhythms think it's nighttime. It's the same for the skin. Disrupted skin cells no longer function optimally, their protective mechanisms are less effective, and it shows: the complexion is dull, the skin tends to be dehydrated, and features are drawn.

The desynchronization can stem from a lack of light. In winter, the days are shorter, and we are particularly deprived of sunlight. This deprivation has been exacerbated by an unprecedented situation where curfews are following lockdowns.
It's not always easy to give our skin the daily dose of natural light it needs! Exposure to natural light is very important for the health of our skin, and a daily outing to enjoy it shouldn't be overlooked.

Overexposure to screens: beware of blue light

While a lack of light can have harmful effects on the skin, too much of certain types of light isn't recommended either! One of these is particularly dangerous and is gaining more and more attention: blue light. Blue light is emitted by all kinds of screens, such as those on your phone, computer, or television. At the same intensity, it uses up to 70 times more energy in our eyes than "ordinary" light.
You see where we're going with this: exposure to blue light is particularly problematic when it's time to fall asleep. Looking at your phone in bed is like looking at a very bright lamp, which delays melatonin secretion and disrupts your entire cycle.
