Wrinkles do not appear in the same way across every area of the face. While some people first notice a frown line between the eyebrows, others may see fine lines developing on the forehead, around the mouth or on the neck. Each of these areas has its own story and deserves targeted care. In this article, we take a closer look at forehead wrinkles, upper lip wrinkles, wrinkles around the mouth and neck wrinkles: how they form, why dry and mature skin is particularly prone to them, and which PAYOT skincare products can help visibly smooth their appearance.
Forehead wrinkles: when facial expressions leave their mark
Forehead wrinkles are generally horizontal lines that extend across the forehead. They develop as a result of repeatedly raising the eyebrows – when surprised, listening attentively or concentrating on a screen. At first, these are simply expression lines that disappear once the face relaxes. Over time, however, these movements can become increasingly etched into the skin as collagen and elastin production naturally declines with age, reducing the skin’s ability to return to its original shape. Dry skin can make these lines appear even more pronounced, as it lacks the moisture needed to keep the skin plump and supple.

Upper lip wrinkles and wrinkles around the mouth: an often-overlooked area
Upper lip wrinkles, sometimes referred to as smoker’s lines or barcode lines, appear as fine vertical lines above the lips. Wrinkles around the mouth cover a broader range, from small fine lines surrounding the lips to deeper lines extending from the corners of the mouth. This area tends to show signs of ageing particularly quickly because it has very few sebaceous glands and the skin is thinner than on other areas of the face. It is also constantly in motion when we speak, smile, laugh or eat.

Neck wrinkles: often forgotten, but just as important
The neck is often overlooked in a daily skincare routine, yet it is frequently one of the first areas to show visible signs of ageing. The skin here is thinner and contains fewer sebaceous glands, meaning it has less natural protection than facial skin. Neck wrinkles develop partly as a result of the natural loss of elasticity with age, but repeated head movements and UV exposure also play a role, particularly as this area is often left unprotected from the sun.

Why dry and mature skin is particularly vulnerable
Dry and mature skin have one important factor in common: a weakened skin barrier. As we age, the skin naturally produces less hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin – key components that help maintain hydration, volume and firmness. When the skin also lacks moisture, its barrier becomes more vulnerable to external aggressors, and fine lines can develop into more visible wrinkles more quickly.
