When the cold weather arrives, it's not uncommon to notice some changes in your skin: duller, uncomfortable, more sensitive and prone to redness... what if we told you that simple changes to your daily skincare routine could put an end to these little winter ailments? Follow the guide to take care of your skin throughout the season.
Why is skin more uncomfortable in winter?
In winter, the skin is weakened by several factors linked to climatic and environmental conditions:
The air is drier in homes: the cold outside and indoor heating reduce the humidity level in the air, which dries out the skin. Dehydrated skin lacks water, is uncomfortable, and this can lead to a feeling of tightness and discomfort throughout the day.
Loss of hydration: With the cold, the skin barrier is weakened, the hydrolipidic film that protects the skin no longer fully fulfills its function, which leads to faster evaporation of the water present in the skin. This makes the skin more vulnerable to external aggressions.
Cold: This phenomenon is more commonly known as vasoconstriction. Cold causes a reduction in blood flow to the skin's surface, which limits the production of sebum, a natural lubricant that protects the skin. Less sebum means less well-protected skin, making it drier and more prone to irritation.
Should you change your skincare routine in winter? Rest assured, you don't need to change your entire beauty routine to regain supple and comfortable skin. Your skin needs a daily supply of hydration and lipids to stay healthy. At Payot, we recommend opting for richer-textured moisturizers in winter and switching to facial oils. Indeed, richer textures often contain vegetable butters and therefore lipids, and these create a protective barrier on the surface of the skin to limit the phenomenon of transepidermal water loss. Our recommendation: Apply a serum enriched with hyaluronic acid, such as the Source Rehydrating Serum, or with hydrating active ingredients of your choice, morning and evening, and complete your routine with a cream enriched with nourishing active ingredients, such as shea butter, which you will find in our Nutricia Cream.

If you don't want to change your usual routine, use a few drops of facial oil and massage it into your skin in the evening after applying your night cream for perfectly nourished skin when you wake up.
Applied as the last step in your routine, vegetable oils help seal in moisture and prevent dry skin. It is also possible to apply them after your day cream if you feel the need; a few drops of Huile Bonne Mine applied just after your daily skincare will restore your skin's natural radiance while nourishing it thanks to the presence of organic apricot oil in its formula.
Additional advice: In winter, remember not to cleanse your skin too often in order to protect the hydrolipidic film; double cleansing in the evening is generally enough to rid the skin of impurities.
And the body in all this?
Replace your usual shower gel with a lipid-replenishing shower oil; the fatty acids in its formula will help form a protective film on the skin's surface and help limit dehydration. After showering, when your skin is still a little damp, apply a few pumps of 24H Moisturizing Milk. Its ultra-gentle formula is enriched with shea butter and its fine texture does not leave a greasy finish on the skin.
